Listen to Obituary

Harry Carlton Weathers, 85, of Waynesboro, Georgia peacefully passed away at home with his family by his side on May 7, 2026. He had battled pulmonary fibrosis for some time and, for the past month, pneumonia. Harry was a gentle, but strong and independent, soul and a devoted husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle and a friend to all who knew him. He was exceptionally grateful for the great outdoors and all of its living inhabitants and took the time to see and appreciate nature’s daily gifts to us all. He lovingly created a bird sanctuary in his garden, cultivating a peaceful refuge where birds could nest, feed, and flourish through the seasons. With compassion and understanding, Harry met people where they were in their lives and delighted in the success and happiness of family members, friends, and others in the community.

Harry was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, to Ivelyn (Lynn) and Darwin Brake on July 19, 1940. His father served in WWII with the US Air Force as a night fighter pilot and died serving our country when Harry was a young child. He spent many years living near his grandparents’ homes in Macon, Milledgeville, and Sandersville, Georgia. When he was seven years old, Harry’s mother, Lynn, married Tom Weathers who was in the pulpwood and timber business in Milledgeville. Tom adopted Harry and moved the family to Waynesboro to open Weathers Wood and Timber when Harry was 14 years old.

Harry graduated from Waynesboro High School and was class president his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was voted best dressed for class senior superlatives. Harry also taught the boys’ Sunday school class at his church at the time, First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, for several years.

After high school, Harry attended and graduated from Georgia Southern University for undergraduate studies and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He then attended and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Masters of Social Work and spent his entire career in the mental health field, both as a therapist and as an administrator. Harry worked in various positions throughout the state of Georgia and retired in 2004 from Behavioral Health Link in Augusta, which provided crisis management and counseling services. Harry was a very skilled listener with a caring nature and his clients appreciated and valued his commitment to them and to his profession.

While working at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Harry met his soulmate and love of his life, Kaye Wells. They were married on June 9, 1979, at Fripp Island, South Carolina. Together with their son, Shawn, they made their home in Waynesboro at that time and their garden became a paradise for birds, butterflies, cats, other critters, and many family members and friends. Both Kaye and Harry had a special tenderness for abandoned and homeless animals, always making room in their hearts and home for creatures in need of care, safety, and kindness.

Harry was a certified Master Gardener and, in this capacity, he devoted countless hours to serving the Burke County community. Both he and Kaye supported the work of making Waynesboro a beautiful place to live. They opened their garden and home to raise money for the Burkeland Garden Club by participating in the club’s annual garden tour on two different occasions over the years. Harry was an avid reader and was a dedicated supporter of and advocate for the Burke County Library. He also supported the work of Waynesboro’s very own Wimberly House, an ecumenical outreach ministry that offers youth camps, counseling, support groups and other community programs.

Harry served on the Waynesboro Historic Preservation Commission, including a term as chairperson of the commission, and shared and fully supported the commission’s goals of protecting the historical, cultural and aesthetic heritage of the community while promoting revitalization and tourism development through the preservation of historic properties. Harry lived in and took great care of his own historic home, a classic craftsman bungalow, together with its beautiful gardens.

Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Kaye Weathers. He is survived by his son, Shawn Lanier, and his husband, Kenneth Newberg, their daughters Emma Kaye and Katherine Anne of Weston, Massachusetts, his sister, Nan, and her husband, Greg Mautz, of Athens, Georgia, and his sister, Alison, and her husband, Lou Imbrogno, of Evans, Georgia . He leaves behind three nephews, Rob and Matt Mautz and Zack Imbrogno, along with their families, as well as his best friend and brother of more than 70 years, Gary Glover, and his wife, Andrea, of Augusta, Georgia, and his beloved cat, Evie.

The family wishes to extend our deepest appreciation and sincere thanks to Dr. Bonnie Jenkins and her wonderful staff, the doctors and nursing staff who cared for him at Burke Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospice nurses, Karin and Kim, St. Joseph’s certified nursing assistant, NeNe, and his around-the-clock private care team, Anita Dunsun, Christine Walker, and Christine Crawford. The skill, commitment, and compassion of each of these individuals were exemplary and our hearts are full of gratitude for each of you and all you did on this journey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Wimberly House Ministries, PO Box 50, Waynesboro, Georgia or the Burke County Library, 130 GA Highway 24S, Waynesboro, Georgia. Please note that your gift is “In memory of Harry Weathers” should you wish to donate.
