Harry H. Bartles

EVANS – Mr. Harry H. Bartles, beloved husband of 60 years of Lora Beth Bartles, entered into rest on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at University Hospital.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Dave Dillard and Chaplain Jeff Thompson officiating.

Mr. Bartles was born in Union Mills, N.C. on June 9, 1927. In 1932, his family moved to Columbia County, where he spent a majority of his life. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, and retired from CSX Railroad as an engineer after 37 years. He was a member of Warren Baptist Church, where he served as a greeter, and was a member of the Volunteer Sunday school class. He was active in the Martinez Masonic Lodge # 710 for 43 years, and achieved a 32 degree Scottish Rite. Harry was appointed Knight Commander of Honor in October 1995 for his many years of service as a Mason.

In addition to his wife, Lora Beth, he is also survived by his son, Phil W. Bartles and wife Wyche, a grandson, Rex Bartles, a brother, Jack Bartles and wife Margaret, his sisters, Evelyn Blanchard and husband, Randall of McDonough, GA., and Jean Blackard and husband, Bill of Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Ila Bartles, his brothers, Lewis, Bill, Mack and Willard, and his sister, Elizabeth Fleming.

The family wishes to express special thanks for the care and compassion given by Dr. Danny Newman and the entire staff of the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
