Gertrude E. Phillips, age 95 entered into rest on Sunday, March 14, 2021. She was the widow of the late James W. Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Augusta to the late Robert Gary Maddox and Mary Ellen Davis Maddox. She married her true love on August 30, 1946 in Aiken, South Carolina and they spent 64 wonderful years together until his passing in 2010.
She loved the Lord and served Him fervently through the former Broad Street Baptist Church. Before her health declined, she could have been found singing in the choir every Sunday and working diligently to raise money for the church. Until her last breath, Mrs. Phillips never had a bad day and she tried her best to make sure no one else did either. She was grateful for each day the Lord gave her and she devoted her life to serving others. Mrs. Phillips loved everyone and she was truly a good person.
Having a zeal for life, she liked to have a little fun too- enjoying road trips to Biloxi and Cherokee to play the slot machines.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, James Geary Phillips.
She is survived by her son, Melvin Ray Phillips of Evans; two grandchildren, Robin Kersey of Augusta, and Lynn Brooks of Griffin; four great grandchildren, Brandon Kersey, Randy Pelham, Ronnie Pelham, and Sandra Pelham; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 P.M. on Thursday at Platt’s on Crawford Avenue.
A celebration of Mrs. Phillips’ life will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Platt’s with Reverend Jerry Brooks officiating. Interment will be private in Westover Memorial Park.
Memorials may be directed to Lake Park Baptist Church, 211 Milledge Road, Augusta, Georgia 30904.
