George Lopez-Rodriguez
Born on October 25, 1949 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the son of Gregoria and Angel Lopez.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Platt's Belair Road Chapel. Interment to follow at Westover Memorial Park.
As an infant, his parents moved to New York City, NY in 1950, where he grew up in Spanish Harlem up until the age of 12 when he moved back to Ponce, Puerto Rico.
George met his wife Marta at the age of 16 years old, at the Junior High School they attended together, they eventually got married in 1968 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Shortly thereafter, they moved to New York City, and welcomed the birth of their first child (George Jr.) In 1969. George lived with his new family in the Bronx NY a short period before moving back to Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1970.
In late 1971, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and departed to attend Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC. He would proudly served his country for over 21 year highlighted with accompanied and unaccompanied tours in Germany (two years), Ft. Carson, Colorado where their second child (Stanley) was born in 1974, Ft Monmouth 1975, NJ., Okinawa, Japan (three Year), White Sand Missile Range, New Mexico; Korea -three separate 1 Year tours; Ft Sill, Oklahoma; Homestead AFB, FL; Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Amsterdam (NATO HQ), Netherlands; and finally retiring from the Army after completing his final tour at Ft Gordon, GA in 1992.
After his retirement from active military service, George continued to serve his country working for the Department of Veterans Affairs as staunched Veterans Service Advocate up until he fully retiring in 2011 at the age of 62.
Throughout his life, George enjoyed playing many sports including basketball, volleyball, Ping-Pong and his favorite sport Baseball. He also enjoyed traveling to visit and spend quality time with his large extended family and especially with his Grandkids.
George is a graduate of Southern Illinois University, earning a bachelors of Science degree in Health Care Management, and also attained an Associate Degree in Communications from Georgia Military College.
George is Survived by his wife Marta, his two Son’s (and their Spouses) George Jr & Graciela, and Stanley & Heather, and his six Grandchildren: Milagro, Rafael, Andrew, Giovanni, Jorge, and Aiden, as well as his other living siblings: Cathy, Robert, Hector, Gladys and James.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening, January 10, 2021 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM
