Francis Earl Poythress, 85, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away on June 2, 2024. He was born on May 27, 1939, in Meridian, Mississippi. Earl, known for his kind and joking nature, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His life motto was “finish the race”, and he has done just that.
Earl had a successful career as a civil engineer for over 50 years, working in different capacities with pipeline companies as well as community and government officials.
He graduated from Meridian High School and later pursued higher education at Mississippi State University. Earl was a dedicated member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church and One Heart Church in Atlanta. In 2017, he and his wife relocated to Augusta, Georgia, and became members at Warren Augusta.
In his free time, Earl enjoyed UGA Football, baseball, NASCAR racing, coaching, teaching Sunday School, attending Bible Study Fellowship, and supporting his grandchildren in their various activities.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Cox Poythress, daughters Patricia Dekle (David), Pamela Griffin (Mark), grandchildren Caroline Knight (Jake), Audra Miller (Drew), Anna Dekle, Judson Dekle, Walker Dekle, Alise Griffin, Davis Griffin, Bennett Griffin, and great-grandson, Davidson Dekle.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Sarah Poythress.
The family will have a private graveside service.
