Edward Lewis, Jr., 79, of Grovetown, GA, entered his eternal rest on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in a long-term care facility in North Augusta, SC, after a short illness resulting in being placed in hospice care.
Edward, a.k.a. Eddie, was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Edward Lewis, Sr. and Lurene Boles Lewis on July 15, 1946.
Edward graduated from Richmond Hill High School in Queens, NY. He attended a university in Florida on a basketball scholarship but decided college was not for him and thereafter joined the United States Marine Corps and served our country during the Vietnam War. After returning home from Vietnam in the early 1970s he became an active member of a band named Vibrates in New York. Edward was a very talented and accomplished musician. He played many instruments which came natural to him. He interviewed at the famous music school, The Juilliard School, in Lincoln Center Plaza in New York. His talent and skills afforded him the opportunity to play in the bands with Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, and James Brown to name a few. He always said that "It was no big deal, we just had fun!"
Other members of the family were talented in music as well. He and his brother, Perry, formed a band and his sister, Rebena, was the singer. They called themselves Apple Jam and they booked gigs all over New York.
Edward’s overall goal was to be a conductor of music but that was never accomplished because the Lord had other plans for him. He was called to become a minister and was ordained on August 9, 1996. Music then became a large part of his ministry. He loved the Lord with all his heart.
During Edward’s journey in life he married three times. The first marriage was to Betty and they had a son named Daryl. The second marriage was to Annie and they had a son named Edward Dupree Lewis, III. Annie had six children by a previous marriage and their names are Levi, Gloria, Chris, Michael, Veronica, and Vicky. Edward always referred to them as “my kids” never “my stepchildren”. During his marriage to Annie they were blessed with two more children, Tayvon and Katrina, who they raised as their own. Needless to say Edward and Annie worked multiple jobs to try and provide for this big family.
The third marriage was to Eva in his later years. They met on June 5, 2004, in Beckley, WV, and married on May 10, 2013.
Edward is preceded in death by his mother, Lurene; his father, Edward Lewis, Sr.; his second wife, Annie; his daughter, Gloria; his son, Michael; and his sister, Rebena.
The family survivors are too numerous to mention but here are a few: Perry (brother), Aaron (brother), Gwenie (cousin), Linda (cousin), Levi (son), Chris aka Foot Print (son), and Veronica (daughter).
