On May 13, 2022, at the age of 90, Dr. Silvia Garcia Richart entered into her eternal rest. Throughout the course of her life, her love for her Savior, her family, her work, and her roses never wavered. Always a lady who was known for her gracious and kind demeanor, Dr. Richart was a well-loved professor of chemistry at Augusta College, now Augusta University, from September 1, 1961- July 1, 1993. During that time, Dr. Richart was chosen by the students as Augusta College’s First Outstanding Teacher of the Year. While she was indeed honored to receive such recognition, she felt she was simply doing what she loved. To know her, was to love her. She freely shared her life, her knowledge, and her roses with those around her.
Dr. Richart was born in Havana, Cuba on November 5, 1931, to Maria Pola Gonzalez-Quevedo and Carlos (Charles) Manuel Garcia. She later married the love of her life, Dr. James (Santiago) Richart, her major professor at the University of Havana. Following the death of her father, in the early 1960s, the newlyweds and her mother came to this country. James taught chemistry at Paine College and Silvia, at Augusta College. Fluent in both Spanish and English, her lectures were never uninteresting; her accent kept her students on their toes!
She was predeceased by both her parents and her husband. Dr. Richart is survived by her children, Lourdes Mary Richart of Augusta, GA, Dr. Charles Manuel Richart (Jacque) of Suwanee, GA, two grandchildren, Alexandra Maria Richart and James Andrew Richart, and Susan and Harold Simon of Birmingham, AL.
Before she became ill with Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Richart attended Saint Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. Additionally, she was a member for over fifty years of both the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Rose Society.
