Donnie Waymond Blankenship

Dr. Donnie Waymond Blankenship, beloved husband of Elizabeth “Betty” Blankenship, entered into rest on Monday, June 3, 2024.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 7, 2024 in the chapel of Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Road with the Rev. Mark Scholten officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Donnie was born on December 12, 1942, in Rome, Georgia to the late Bernice Reece Blankenship and the late Melvin H. Blankenship. After high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force, and honorably served for the next four years. After his military service was completed, he attended the University of Georgia, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then went on to earn his PHD from Georgia Institute of Technology. As a graduate of both institutions, he was a football fan of UGA and Georgia Tech, which made for some interesting game days. He was employed as a nuclear physicist with the Savanah River Site before his retirement. 

In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by his son, Will Blankenship (Wendy) and his grandchildren, Samantha, Matthew and Jacob. He was preceded in death by his parents, Malvin and Bernice, and his sister, Sharon Blankenship. 

If so desired, memorials may be made in his honor to his home church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4303 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA 30907.
