Cindy C. Wilkes

Cindy (Cromer) Wilkes, 69, passed away on September 1, 2026, at her family home in Harlem, GA. She was born in Columbia, SC, to the late John Earl Cromer and Margaret Berley Cromer on February 12, 1957. She grew up in Newberry, SC and graduated from Newberry High School and was notably crowned Miss Newberry in 1974.

Cindy was a horse breeder for many years and was well-regarded nationwide for her work with Hanovarian hunter jumpers. Several of her stallions produced numerous IHF and Breed Show winners. She was also a member of the Belle Meade Fox Hunt in Thomson, GA, an organization with a long tradition in the local community. Cindy was a dedicated animal lover with a special and unwavering love for cats. Her compassion for animals was evident to everyone who knew her, and she found joy and comfort in caring for her feline companions.

Cindy is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, Dr. James Wilkes; son, Zachary Wilkes (Amanda); stepson, John Wilkes (Kara); sisters, Erma Johnson, Lou Doolittle, and Vickie Bost (Dennis); brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph Wilkes (Debby); sisters-in law, Ginger Wiley (John) and Jane Wilkes; and three grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.

Along with her parents, Cindy was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Cromer and brothers-in-law, Charles Doolittle and Dr. William Wilkes.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Platt's Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Road, Evans, GA 30809.
