Billie Lynn (Phillips) Munson was born on January 18, 1943 in Brownwood, TX and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Her parents were Floyd Phillips and Johnnie Neal; Billie was born to them while Floyd served in the Army during World War II. She went home to the Lord on Jan 23, 2021 in Evans, GA.
She is survived by her husband Steve, her daughter Amy, and her two sons, Ron and Danny. Amy lives nearby in Evans, Ron and his wife Sharon live in Florida, and Danny lives in Texas. Chris, a former son-in-law whom she claimed as a son, also lives nearby. She was blessed with a total of seven grandchildren. The eldest Jessi resides in Oklahoma, Holly in North Carolina, Dillon in Alaska, Marshall in Florida, Steven in Texas, and Cole and Brady who live in Evans and visited her every day. She dreamed of spending time with all her grandchildren, especially her two great children Kailynn and Bailey, also in Oklahoma, but her illness prevented her from traveling often. Billie will forever be remembered as a loving and loyal wife, Mom, and Grammy.
Those who knew Billie, can attest to her deep love for others. She was outspoken about her beliefs and was always for the underdog. She is remembered for always focusing on children she felt were being left out at family gatherings, or those that just needed special attention. She was a military spouse and often hosted events for Chaplains and their wives in her home. She would say she was not a good hostess, but everyone who benefited from her graciousness would argue otherwise.
Billie was an exceptional nurse who served as a pediatric and mental health LPN at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. After marrying her husband Steve, who was in the Marines, she served as a Red Cross Volunteer in military hospitals. She often reflected on her last nursing position with two internal medicine doctors she loved in Fort Worth, Texas. Her gifts of compassion and empathy blessed those all around her.
Billie was a dedicated woman who always put the needs of her family over her own. She demonstrated the strong woman of Proverbs 31, who cared for her family. She was a faithful and obedient servant of God, willing at all times to follow God’s call, no matter what crazy places God, and Steve, took her. She repeatedly sacrificed her desires for the plans God desired, and in doing so, touched lives all over the world. She is loved by so many and has left a legacy that will live for generations.
Billie quietly battled dementia. Sustained by her Christian faith, she defied the odds on the effects the disease and was able communicate, laugh, and demonstrate her kind sassiness to the end. On Saturday morning January 23rd, 2021 in her home with her devoted husband holding her, after years of illness, Billie entered into God’s presence. We are sure the celebration was wild as she danced before the Father! She is missed and remembered for her kindness toward others, love for family, compassion for those in need, and a spicy attitude that filled every room she entered.
A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at Journey Community Church in Evans, Georgia on January 28, 2021 at 11:00am. It will be streamed live and a link provided for those who would like to virtually attend. Billie will be buried the next day at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina. Both the Memorial and Graveside Services will be conducted by Chaplain (LTC) Rick Winchester and Chaplain (LTC) Tommie Pickens.
If you desire to do something in her memory, rather than flowers, consider donating to Changing Focus Ministries, which reaches out to the Marshallese people. Billie enjoyed serving in the Marshall Islands and befriended a missionary couple there sharing Christ and supplying medical supplies to people in need.
