Mrs. Barbara B. McCutcheon, loving wife of the late Roy B. McCutcheon, Jr. passed away quietly at her home on November 13, 2021 at the age of 101.
Barbara was born August 11, 1920 in Bartow, GA, where she was raised. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Inez Bedingfield. She graduated from Bartow Schools and Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, GA. After college, she and her family moved to Augusta, where she began her career as a teacher at Monte Sano elementary School. In 1943, she met the love of her life, Roy B. McCutcheon, Jr., a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. They married that summer, and he was sent overseas soon after. Upon his return, they settled in Augusta and raised two sons, R. Bates McCutcheon III and Hugh M. McCutcheon. Once the boys were old enough, she returned to teaching. She taught various grades at T. Harry Garrett Elementary School, where some of the students respectfully called her “Bulldog.” She retired after more than twenty years at Garrett. She was a long-term member of the teachers sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Winston Bedingfield and his wife Velma. She is survived by her sons Bates (Martha) and Hugh (Gigi) and eight grandchildren Bric (Scott) Rahimi, Carson (Joel) Thompson, R.B. (Morgan) McCutcheon, Amelia (Kevin) McDougal, Ellis (Beth) McCutcheon, Meredith (Stephan) Hollis, John Bates (Katie) McCutcheon, and Taylor McCutcheon. She is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren and her nephew Windy (Betsy) Bedingfield and niece Sherri Bedingfield.
The family wishes to express their tremendous gratitude to the wonderful ladies of Comfort Keepers, especially Mona, Pam, and Beverly. We also wish to thank her kind neighbors whose visits she treasured, especially Mrs. Lynda Smith. Lastly, many thanks to Dr. William Neumann who provided loving care over many years, making house calls frequently.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Westover Memorial Park at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ted Clarkson officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Episcopal Day School Endowment Fund or the charity of your choice.
