It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Colonel Arthur (Art) Lytton Brooke III, who departed this world on March 21, 2025. Born in Birmingham, Alabama March 26, 1936, he grew up both in Huntsville and Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Alabama and entered the Army. Col. Brooke dedicated his life to the service of his country and while in Germany met his wife to be, Heike Lindner Brooke (Salzmann), of Augsburg Germany. Art and Heike married on June 8, 1966, in Annapolis, MD.
After Germany, Col. Brooke served in both Vietnam and with Heike three years in Iran. Returning from Iran he was assigned to manage the USO in Washington DC. Working with the likes of Bob Hope, Jose Ferrer, and many others, Col. Brooke was responsible for finding entertainment acts, to send to Armed Forces serving around the world.
After Washington DC, Col. Brooke was assigned to Fort Sill and then Ft. Gordon, where he served as a personnel officer until he retired from the military with the rank of Colonel. He was decorated with numerous medals including the Legion of Merit and The Bronze Star.
Beyond his military achievements, Col. Brooke was devoted to his wife, and they spent their later years traveling the world. He was predeceased by his wife Heike and his parents Arthur and Jeanette Brooke. Col. Brooke is survived by his children: Susan Pullin of Washington DC, Michael Sleeper (Keelyn) of Augusta, GA and Mike Tan (Matilde) of Hayward, CA and a wide circle of friends and family here and in Germany.
A service in remembrance will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd on April 26th at 11am. Donations may be made in Col Brooke’s name to The Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta, Georgia.
