William Youmans McLean of Evans, Ga., died January 27, 2012. At his side were his wife of sixty years, Jane Wells McLean, and his three children, William Y. McLean, Jr. of Atlanta, Jonathan Wells McLean of Boston, Amanda McLean Foster and husband Mike, of Evans, Ga., and his grandchildren.
Bill was born in Vidalia, Ga., in 1927. He was very young when his father, William Clayton Youmans, died. Bill was raised in Douglas, Ga. by his mother, the late Alma Todd Youmans McLean, and his stepfather, the late John Archibald McLean. He graduated from Douglas High School and attended Marion Institute in Marion, AL., and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Architecture.
Upon graduation, Bill and his new bride, Jane Wells of Douglas and Atlanta, lived in Atlanta where he worked for a large architectural firm. After his active duty as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, he practiced architecture in Rome and Albany, Ga., before establishing his own firm in Tifton, Ga. In 1974, Bill received an opportunity to serve as Chief Architect at the Medical College of Georgia where he stayed until his retirement in 1996.
Bill was also dedicated to his service as a Lieutenant in the Navy and to his service as a board member of the Health Center Credit Union. He was an avid Tech fan throughout his life, and enjoyed golfing and listening to his extensive collection of music, especially jazz. His most enjoyable times were spent with his family and visiting with friends in his hometown.
In addition to his wife and children, Bill is survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild: Vivian Jane McLean Smith and her husband Brian and son Sage of Atlanta; William Henry McLean of Atlanta; Brittany, Jonathan, Jr., and Brandon McLean of Boston; and Amanda Margaret Aragon of Evans, Ga.
The funeral will be held at Platt’s Funeral Home on Monday, January 31, 2012 at 11:00 A.M.
