Vaughn Maxwell, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Mr. Vaughn Leon Maxwell, Jr., 86, beloved husband of 56 years of Isabelle Robertson Maxwell, entered into rest on Monday, January 11, 2016.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 15, 2016 at St Paul’s Episcopal Church with Rev. George D. Muir officiating.

Vaughn was born January 24, 1929 in Augusta to the late Margaret McDowell Maxwell and Dr. Vaughn Leon Maxwell. He was a graduate of Richmond Academy and Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1949B, with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. While at VMI he was on the golf team for three years, Regimental Commander of the Corps of Keydets, President of the First Class (Senior Class) and Honor Court President. Upon graduation, he received the ROTC Medal of Excellence and the Cincinnati Medal of Honor (an honor given by the Society of Cincinnati for efficiency of service and excellence of character). He was initiated in the Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Washington and Lee University after graduation.

Vaughn was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. He served in the military at Fort Riley Kansas in the Infantry with the 5th Calvary Regement Company H, 1st Calvary Division. Vaughn was an instructor at the Officer Candidate School and later assigned to Fort Jackson, SC, where he commanded basic training companies. He arrived in Korea on October 7, 1951 and was with the second U.S. Division to enter the Korean Conflict. Vaughn was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Korean Service Ribbon with two bronze service stars as a Platoon Leader for his units participation in two major battles.

Vaughn moved back to Augusta in 1953 where he was employed by DuPont and served in the Army Reserve until 1961. While at DuPont’s Savannah River Plant, he was in construction and start-up of the reactors and led a group in the casting of Uranium. Vaughn was a member of the American Society of Metals.

In 1959, Vaughn joined Stewart Phinizy Hull and Charlie Wolcott as partner in Menardi Southern (formerly Southern Press and Filter Media) in Augusta, GA, with plants in New Jersey, Houston, and California. Vaughn retired in 1998. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, watching all sports, and telling VMI stories. He was a loving husband to his “Dearie”, a devoted father, grandfather, and role model to many.

In addition to his beloved “Dearie”, Mr. Maxwell is survived by his three children, Isabelle Maxwell Croft (Chuck) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Vaughn Leon Maxwell, III (Marianne) of North Augusta, SC, and Margaret Maxwell Boilini (Dr. Henry) of Niceville, FL; his grandchildren, James Maxwell Croft, John Willson Croft, Hayden Michael Boilini, Andrew Maxwell Boilini, and Isabella Alexis Boilini; his sister, Barbara Maxwell MacMillan; his cousin, Joy Dees; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express extreme gratitude and thanks to the many care givers that brought joy and comfort into Vaughn’s life over the past five years. This includes, but is not limited to Leon Lewis, Elbert Clark, Lillie Mae Herrington, Charlie Norwood Veterans Administration (Uptown Division), Georgia War Veterans Home, Georgia Regents University Health Center, and Affinis Hospice.
