Rufus M. “Smitty” Smith, age 93, entered into rest on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at his daughter’s residence in Whiteville, North Carolina.
Mr. Smith was born in Honea Path, South Carolina to the late Floyd M. Smith and Gertrude M. Daniels Smith. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. While living in Augusta, Rufus was affectingly known by many in the community as the “Mayor of Broad Street”. He was a 61-year member of the Hillsborough Masonic Lodge No. 25 in Tampa, Florida where he was a 32° Mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James M. Smith; sister, Mildred Teasley, Jerry Smith, David Smith, and Nellie Gregory.
He is survived by his daughters, Millie Granda of Whiteville, NC and Lola Elaine Speight (Randy) of Whiteville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Gil Granda, Ryan Granda, Jared Speight (Kristina), Brett Speight (Kristy), Lacey Speight Borowiec (Jason), and Kenneth James Smith; great grandchildren, Gadisson, Colton, Camden, Jocelyn Jade, Carter Jared, Elisha, and Maddox.
A graveside service will be 3:00 P.M. Friday, January 18, 2019 at Westview Cemetery. Reverend Randy K. Speight will officiate.
