Augusta, GA - Mrs. Ouida T. “Teeny” Newman,92, beloved wife of 71 years to Lewis A. “Pop” Newman entered into rest Saturday, June 22, 2013 at her residence.
She came, she saw, she did not conquer all, but she loved and was loved by all. A sweet Southern Lady always with a smile.
Teeny was born in Wilmington, NC and moved to Augusta in 1938. She graduated from Junior College of Augusta. She met the love of her life that year and they married in 1942.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ouida Mae and Harry Tucker, her son, Lewis (Buz) Newman, and her granddaughter, Melodie Newman.
She devoted her life to her family and church. She also served on the board of the Girl Scouts of Augusta, active in the local Republican Party, a member of the Camellia Garden Club of Augusta She was an active member of Reid Memorial since 1950 and served as historian of the church and was awarded the honorary Life Membership Pin. She volunteered and served on the board of the St. Joseph Auxiliary for over 35 years. She was a loyal employee at Del's Lamps and Shades for 15 years with her daughter.
One important role of her life was when she served as the First Lady to her husband, Former Mayor of Augusta for 9 years, Pop Newman. She was proud and grateful to have had such a wonderful and complete life, filled with love and laughter.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis A. 'Pop' Newman and her children William 'Billy' Newman (Karen) , Adele 'Del' Damiano (Frank) and Betsy McLean, daughter-in-law Sharon Newman, grandchildren Robert 'Bert' Smith, Brian Smith, Tricia Gregg, Brady McLean and Douglas McLean. She is also survived by 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 11:30 am with Dr. Matt Rich officiating, with a reception following the service. A private burial service is planned for family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that Memorial Contributions be made to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church or any local charity.
