Augusta – Mr. Meldrin Wayne “Smooth” Bowdoin, 65, beloved husband of Mary Beth Bowdoin, entered into rest on Friday, October 8, 2010.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel . Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Mr. Bowdoin was a member of Local 150, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and loved his work. He worked hard but also found time for a new joke and a helping hand. He remained active after his retirement in 2003, but missed all the men he had worked with over the past 40 years.
He loved his wife, Mary Beth, and shared 26 wonderful years with his “Baby Girl”. He loved life, family, friends and was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and boating. He was a great cook, and loved to share his home made preserves.
Mel made many memories with all of his grandchildren and his one great grandchild, and taught them much about life and his experiences growing up. They would sit in the swing and, whether sharing stories or teaching them to tie knots, he would always remind them to “stay a little kid and don’t grow up too fast”. Most of his conversations involved him bragging about his wife, children and grandkids.
He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his precious wife, Mary Beth, he is survived by his mother, Ruby Johnston, his mother in law, Mary Louise Guthrie, his daughters, Kim Johnson (Robbie), and Leslie Dailey (Mark), his stepchildren, Donna McIntosh (Joey), Teresa Johnson (Larry) and Glenn Hamilton, his grandchildren, Kayla and Chad Johnson, Zachary, Max and Sam Dailey, Ashley Cross (Ron), Karleigh Canale, Glenn Hamilton, Jr. and Jonathan, Chloe(Daniel) and Blake Kesler, and a great grandchild, Rylan Flynn. He is also survived by his sisters, Kate Cross (Carl) and Jackie Johnston and a brother, Tracy Johnston (Hyuson).
He was preceded in death by his father, Ferris Bowdoin and step father, Ernest Johnston.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Bullard, Donnie Davidson, Frank Hill, Jim Kendrick, Wayne Geyer and Donnie Beasley. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of Local 150 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.
If so desired, memorials may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, PO Box 3034 Augusta, GA 30914 or the Augusta Humane Society, 6 Milledge Rd. Augusta, GA 30904-3063.
