James B. Duncan, Jr.

Augusta, GA---Mr. James Bartow “J. B.” Duncan, Jr., 87, entered into rest on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at University Hospital.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 11:00 am, at Westover Memorial Park, with full military honors by the U. S. Army Honors Team. The Very Reverend Robert D. Fain and Reverend Doctor J. Andrew Menger will officiate.

Born February 6, 1921, in Aiken County, South Carolina, he was the son of Lillian Gaines Wilson and James Bartow Duncan, Sr.

Mr. Duncan graduated in 1938 from the Academy of Richmond County and was a graduate of Augusta Junior College. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving two years in the South Pacific Theater, with the South Pacific General Depot. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as an Artillery Battery Commander, also participated in atomic atmospheric test in Nevada. He was also retired as a Freight Traffic Manager, for Georgia and Florida Railway and District Sales Manager, for Southern Railway System and a retired Colonel, Corps of Engineers, Georgia National Guard with 31 years of service. He last served as Commanding Officer, of the 87th Combat Engineer Battalion, in Augusta.

He was a life member and past vice president, of the Georgia National Guard Association, a member of the National Guard Association, of the United States and a life member, of the Augusta Elks Lodge, VFW Post 3200, Disabled American Veterans Association, National Association of Atomic Veterans, Retired Officers Association, and National Rifle Association and was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hildagarde Rasmussen Newman Duncan and sister, Wilda Duncan Gwin.

Survivors include sons, James B. Duncan III, of Augusta, Randall W. Duncan (Beth), of Newnan, Ga., daughter, Denise D. Rosenzweig (Paul, Jr.), of Augusta and stepdaughter Caroline Newman Haskins (Roland), of Augusta, grandchildren, Rick Duncan, Laura Johnson, Matthew Duncan, Kathleen Duncan, Elliott Duncan, Anna Rosenzweig, Paul Rosenzweig III, Mary Rosenzweig, J. Ashley Day and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife and the mother of his children, Barbara Cheesborough Duncan, of Augusta.

The family will receive friends this evening, Monday, November 10, 2008 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Platt’s Crawford Avenue.

Pallbearers will be members of the U. S. Army Honors Team.
