Hugh McLean Walker, Jr., 90, of North Augusta, SC passed away on May 22, 2023 in Augusta, GA.
Hugh was born in Augusta, GA to Hugh McLean Walker, Sr. and Margie Belle Shackelford Walker on January 17, 1933. After high school, Hugh served in the United States Army. Following the family tradition of military service, he attended the United States Naval Academy - Class of 1956.
He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge - Acacia Lodge #315 in Aiken, SC, attended the Episcopal Church, and greatly enjoyed his membership in the Dupont Recreation Association Raccoon Hunting Club. Hugh was always busy at his country home building something, fixing things, and he truly loved woodworking. If Dad did not know how to do it, he would figure it out. Hugh was also a great lover of animals. As a boy, he dearly loved his dog Rance. When we were growing up, there was always a menagerie in residence. When Dad passed away this week, there was his beloved dog Biscuit waiting faithfully for him to return.
Hugh is preceded in death by his wife, Joan and his son Hugh M. “Clay” Walker III.
Hugh is survived by his son Daryl Shipman and wife Sherry and his daughter Beverly Winchester and husband Calvin, his sister Jeanne Hendrix Baggs, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Hugh’s honor may be given to Walker Family Cemetery C/O Russell Shearer 626 Boeckh St. N. Augusta, SC 29841.
The family of Hugh wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Kay Davis and all the doctors, nurses and staff at the VA hospital in Augusta.
