Herbert Allen "Bert" Dean, Jr.

Herbert Allen Dean, Jr., age 75, died November 17, 2023 at his home in Augusta, GA after succumbing to cancer.


The family will receive friends at Platt’s Funeral Home Crawford Avenue Chapel on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. His memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on December 9, 2023 in Roxboro, NC at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.


Herbert “Bert” was born on October 29, 1948 in Roxboro, NC to Barbara Morris Dean and Herbert Allen Dean. He attended college at both the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. Bert’s career progressed from disc jockey at various radio stations in North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia to starting his own Advertising & Public Relations Agency over 40 years ago. He served on the Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House in the past, was a Jaycee in North Carolina and was a Rotarian in the past in Georgia. Bert co-coordinated the Hand Warmer Project in Augusta for many years with Bert Sappenfield and Larry Miller of Century 21 Larry Miller Realty.


Bert married Margaret Rose Whitlow of Roxboro, NC on March 23, 1968. In addition to his wife, Bert is survived by his son, Herbert Allen Dean, III (Sandi); grandson, John Lee Dean (Hannah); granddaughter, Lilly Klein; his two sisters, Barbara Carol Dean (Don) and Jacqueline Dean Jennings (Jay); and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.


Bert dearly loved his family and made sure everyone knew it. He was a mentor to many men and women over the years in Augusta, GA. He loved creating successful TV and Radio campaigns and jingles for his clients over the years such as Wife Saver, Taylor Toyota, Gary’s Hamburgers, Intellisystems and several other car dealers in South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and West Virginia. Bert created the Dineout Downtown Campaign for Augusta’s downtown restaurants many years ago. He was active in the late 70’s in the Augusta Theater working alongside his best friend, Matt Stovall.
