LTC Gerald DeArmond Hicks (US Army ret.)
Evans, Ga – LTC Gerald DeArmond Hicks, 79, beloved husband of Diane Burchfield Hicks, entered into rest on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at his residence.
A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at the Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery, 2200 East Gov. John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN., 37920.
LTC Hicks was born and raised in Knoxville, and attended Lincoln Park, Belle Morris and Inskip Elementary schools, Chistenberry and Park junior high school, and then graduated from East High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, and in 1958, was commissioned into the US Army as a 2nd LT.
His twenty four year service in the military included two tours of duty in Vietnam, service with the Army Material Command in Fort Belvoir, VA., the Army Missile Command, 7th Army, in Germany, American Mission in Greece, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, GA., and Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, VA. His last duty station was at Fort Bragg, where he retired in 1979 as Assistant Chief of Staff (Automation) with the 18th Airborne Corps. He received numerous military awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (Two Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (Two Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation, Army Commendation Medals, as well as many others.
After the military, he served more than eighteen years in the Federal Civil Service, and retired as Deputy Director Automation and Telecommunication at the US Army Reserve Command at Fort MacPherson, GA. in 2001.
In addition to his wife, Diane, he is survived by his sons; Brian (Delores Wright) Hicks and Michael (Karen Shockley) Hicks, his daughter; Patti Hicks (Andrew Rose), his grandchildren; Alexander “AJ” Hicks (Zureilly), Christopher Hicks, Wesley Hicks, Megan Fugate Middleton and Ashley Fugate Leigh (Tim/Mitch) and a great grandchild, Emma Jane Middleton. He is also survived by a brother, John M. Hicks, a nephew, Kevin and family, and nieces, Julie and family, and Mary (Nikki) McBay and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; William D. and Elizabeth Tobler Hicks, his brothers and sisters in law; Jay W. and June Maiden Hicks, M. Roger and Fran Colvard Hicks, Pat Miller Hicks and a niece, Dana Hicks.
