After childhood and youth in Augusta Emery entered the Salvation Army Officer’s Training College in Atlanta in 1942 and was commissioned a Probationary Captain in May of 1943. His first appointment was in Miami, Fl at the Edison corps where he met and fell in love with Juanita Gomez with whom he shared a 48 year romance and 4 children.

After his marriage to Juanita in 1947 they shared corps appointments in Waycross, GA; Jacksonville (Citadel) FL; St. Petersburg (Citadel) FL; Owensboro, KY; Louisville, KY; Charlottesville, VA and Norfolk, VA. Service on Divisional Headquarters followed in Dallas, TX; Charlotte, NC; Jacksonville, FL and Washington DC. Emery’s last appointments were Area Commander for the Miami-Dade County and Houston-Harris County. He retired from active Salvation Army Officership in 1988 with over 45 years of service. He also served as Chaplain for the Houston area ARC for several years after retirement.

In every place successful ministry was carried out, with souls saved, soldiers made, and the future of the Army enhanced by his ministry. Many will remember his beautiful voice and the music he and Juanita made together. He was always a picture of loving strength and stability to his family and those with whom he worked and always brought a peaceful presence to every situation.

After Juanita’s promotion to glory in December of 1996 he continued a life of service to the Lord and others through his ministry to the ARC in Houston, TX a ministry he always said was one of the most fulfilling.

On February 12, 2000 Emery married Ellen Jeanine Mays Frierson, who was his brother Roy’s widow, and the romance, love and devotion began all over again creating a new family of brothers and sisters who were once only cousins as God blended together another place where His love would be expressed in ways we never imagined. Emery always loved family and no one ever doubted his love.

We give thanks for the fruitful life and triumphant home-going of one of God’s faithful soldiers. We will all miss him.
