Elizabeth Jane Burkey (Rose) Storey

EVANS, Ga. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Jane (Rose) Burkey Story, 89, entered into eternal rest on
Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, a most blessed day to go home to be with the Lord. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the North Belair Road Chapel of Platt’s Funeral Home with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Rev. Sherrell Dunn from Curtis Baptist Church will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Platt’s. .

Mrs. Story was born in Alliance, Ohio, on December 1, 1920, and was the daughter of Paul and Pauline Burkey. She later grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating from the Girls’ Trade and Technical High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she worked for several businesses in the area while attending Northwestern University. While in Chicago, she met her husband-to-be, Navy CSF Daniel Adkins Story, Sr., while he was stationed at the Great Lakes in preparation for duty overseas during WWII. They were later married in Augusta, Georgia, on June 19, 1943. Shortly, thereafter, she made her home in Augusta with her mother-in-law while her husband was deployed to the South Pacific with the Navy. At this time, she worked as a secretary at the Augusta Arsenal and later worked for the Thomas H. Brittingham Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Company for many years. She returned to federal work at the Forest Hills Division of the V.A. Hospital and later retired from the Downtown V.A. Hospital.

Mrs. Story has been a long-time member of Curtis Baptist Church where she served as secretary for the 12-year old Sunday School Department for many years. She resided in Augusta, Georgia, until she moved to Evans in recent years to live with one of her daughters. The PTA of the T. Harry Garrett Elementary School recognized her and her husband for being one of only a few families that had children in continuous enrollment at the school since its inception in 1954 until 1971 with the graduation of their youngest child.

Her husband of 45 years, Daniel Adkins Story, Sr. and an infant son, Robert E. Story, preceded Mrs. Story in death. She is survived by her four children: Helen Elizabeth Story of Marietta, Georgia; Harriett Marie Story DeWitt (Terry) of Evans, Georgia; Daniel Adkins Story, Jr. of Martinez, Georgia; and Mary Ann Story of Evans, Georgia. She also has seven grandchildren: Darlene Elizabeth DeWitt Knight (Jason) of Jacksonville, Florida; David Martin DeWitt (Hualei) of Manassas, Virginia; Trina Yvette Story Dunn (John) of Evans, Georgia; Kristen Danielle Story Douglas (Daniel) of Beech Island, South Carolina; and Adara Gaylena Story currently serving in the U.S. Marines at Parris Island, South Carolina; Renee Lynne Cooke of Evans, Georgia; and George Ronald Cooke, Jr. of Evans, Georgia. The five great-grandchildren are Justin Harrell Knight and Jacob Martin Knight of Jacksonville, Florida; Camrey Autum Bledsoe and Chadwick Michael Bass, Jr. of Evans, Georgia; and Layla Danielle Douglas of Beech Island, South Carolina. She is also survived by one great-great grandchild, Tristen Aiden-Loise Marquardt, of Evans, Georgia.

Pallbearers will be her two grandsons: David Martin DeWitt and George Ronald Cooke, Jr. Other pallbearers will be Jason Harrell Knight, Eric Steven Drake, Jason Williams, and Richard Alexander Russell.
