Grovetown, GA – Donnie W. Chavous, Sr., 70, beloved husband of Cynthia LaMar Chavous, entered into rest on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Road Chapel.

Donnie was born in Augusta, GA to the late John H. Chavous and the late Susie Morgan Chavous. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy. He faithfully served on the USS Preble Destroyer during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He joined the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and served for 42 years before retiring as a Captain. Donnie was a family man who loved to spend time hunting and fishing. He enjoyed being “Poppie” to his wonderful grandchildren and was a loyal friend to all.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons; Donnie W. Chavous, Jr. and wife Kim of Evans, GA, Christopher Kelly Chavous and wife Andrea of Grovetown, GA, one daughter; Donna Johnikin and husband Terry of Augusta, GA, three sisters; Christy Bell Whitener, Lee Ellen Carroll, June Whitener, five grandchildren; Brittany Rice, Tyler Chavous, Audrianna Chavous, Shae Chavous, and Brandon Johnikin. In addition to his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by his brothers; John Chavous, Lawrence Chavous, Hiram Chavous, Biram Chavous, Mackey Chavous, and his sisters; Maudell Raborn, Pauline Hood, Betty Luckey, Cora Chavous.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sheriff Ronnie Strength, Frank Tiller, Robert Riddle, Freddie Sanders, and members of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Anand Jillella along with his excellent and supportive staff at MCG Cancer Center.

The family will receive friends from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the funeral home.
