MR. BENNIE E. BRAKE
Augusta - Mr. Bennie E. Brake, 87, entered into rest on Sunday evening, January 10, 2010 at Doctor’s Hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Bruner officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Bennie proudly served in the law enforcement field for most of his career, working as a clerk for the FBI in Savannah and Atlanta, as an investigator with Richmond County’s Sherriff’s Office, and as a Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal in Charleston, Greenville and Columbia, S.C. He retired from the Marshal’s service in 1980. He also attended the 61st session of the FBI National Academy in 1958.
Bennie participated in numerous operations and assignments. One of his most memorable was in 1960, when he was one of four US Marshals selected to escort the first black student to attend a white school, from her home to kindergarten in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He is survived by his wife, Alleen Brake, his son, Bennie Marion Brake and wife, Laura, three step children, Jordan Baker, Rodney Baker and Cheree Baker, his grandchildren, Trisha Brake, Shawna Reed and husband, Bryan and Tyler Brake, and his great grandchildren, Bennie Redd and Amber Reed.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 10, 2010 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
