Evans, GA - Arnold Broyles Barrett died on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the age of 91.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1:00PM at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church with Dr. Matt Rich and Rev. Craig Alan Swartz officiating. A private interment will be held at Westover Memorial Park.
Mr. Barrett was born in Albany, GA on October 30, 1923, the son of Julian Miller Barrett and Frances Elizabeth Broyles. He was reared in Augusta, GA, where his family has lived for six generations. After graduating from the Academy of Richmond County in 1940, he attended The Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated in October 1943 at which time was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy at the age of nineteen. He served with honor in World War II serving in the Pacific on the USS Benham, a destroyer. He also served during the Korean War on the USS Albany in Europe. Mr. Barrett was involved in the textile business serving as Vice President of Riverside Mills and president of Barrett Textile Sales, Inc. both in Augusta.
He was a life-long member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, Augusta, GA. He served as President of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia, one of the oldest hereditary and patriotic organizations in America. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Augusta for over sixty years, the Augusta Country Club, the United States Golf Association, the Chi Phi fraternity and other civic and cultural organizations.
Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife Marquin Livingston Conklin, having married on September 4, 1954 in Atlanta, GA, two daughters, Marquin Barrett McMath and husband Heys Edward McMath, III of Savannah, GA; Frances Barrett Swartz and husband Craig Alan Swartz of Brandon, FL; son, Arnold Broyles Barrett, Jr., of North Augusta, SC; seven grandchildren, Marquin McMath Campbell and husband George Anthony Campbell, Jr., Frances Cazenove McMath, Heys Edward McMath IV, John Craig Swartz, William Bradford Swartz and wife Shauna DeZutter, Laura Livingston Swartz and Andrew Barrett Swartz, his sister-in-law, Patricia Conklin, wife of the late Ensign Campbell Conklin of Atlanta, GA, a niece, a nephew, and numerous cousins.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2261 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904 or to a charity of one’s choice.
