MARTINEZ, Ga. - Dr. Wu-Chieh Cheng, beloved husband of Wenying Liu Cheng, entered into rest on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Doctor's Hospital, Augusta, Ga. at the age of 85. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Platt's Funeral Home Belair Road Chapel with Reverend Steve Spencer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday until the hour of services. Wu-Chieh was born on August 11, 1922 in Shanghai, China. He is survived by his wife Wenying of Martinez; his son, Robert Cheng of Duluth, Ga.; his sisters, De-Fang and De-Hua Zheng; and brother, Wu-Lie Zheng of Shanghai, China. Wu-Chieh received his B.S. from St John's University in Shanghai, China in 1944, his M.S. from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. in 1949 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1954. His career includes Primary Patent Examiner at The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in Washington, D.C., Associate Professor of Physics at Payne College in Augusta, Ga., Associate Professor of Chemistry at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., and Head of Chemistry at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. He worked summers as Faculty Research Fellow at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Faculty Research Participant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Faculty Research Participant at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, Ill., Faculty Member at Rockwell Hanford Operations in Richland, Wash., Faculty Research Participant at Savannah River Laboratory in Aiken, S.C., and Chemist at the Northern Regional Research Center in Peoria, Ill. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, Georgia Academy of Science, New York Academy of Science and Sigma Xi and was published in Who's Who in American Science.
