Nellie Swann Noegel

Nellie Swann Noegel of Augusta died at her home on July 18 at age 96. The seventh of the eight children of John William Swann and Brightie Barker Swann, she was born and reared in Wrens, Jefferson County, Georgia.


She attended Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) from 1944 – 1946, when she transferred to the University of Georgia in Athens, from which she was graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics with a concentration in Foods and Nutrition.


The widow of Frederick William Noegel, Jr., her beloved husband of 54 years, she shared with him their home on William Street for 48 years. They extended their hospitality to foreign exchange teachers and students, to many pastors, and to family members and dear friends.


She was a member of the Jefferson Davis Chapter 2465, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), in Aiken, South Carolina; of the Esther Marion Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Aiken, and was a charter member of the South Carolina Society, Southern Dames of America.


She joined the Hill Baptist Church in 1952, serving as church clerk for twelve years. She served as President of the Langford Junior High PTA and of the William Robinson Elementary School PTA, and she worked on many school committees.


After being graduated from the University of Georgia, she worked briefly for the Georgia Power Company in Athens as a home demonstration specialist before her marriage in September 1948. In the 1960s, along with Mrs Lois Jeffcoat, she established the Food Service Department of the old Forest Hills/Oliver General Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta. Along with Mrs Jan Hudson, Mr Gene Gibson, Mr Millard Beckham, Jr., and her husband, Fred, she was one of the founders of the Summerville Neighborhood Association (SNA). The SNA was founded in Mrs Hudson's home on the corner of Gary and Gardner streets. Later, a public meeting of the SNA was held at Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church.


Mrs. Noegel was predeceased by her husband in 2002; by their son Raymond in 2013; and by her loving daughter-in-law Sharon Estelle Thompson Noegel in 2000. She is survived by her sons William (and fiancée Cathy Brown), of Appling; Robert (Patsy), of Macon; Richard, of Augusta; and her daughter, Julie Hardaway (Mrs J. Clifford), of Aiken, South Carolina; by eleven grandchildren: William P. Noegel (Andrea L.) of Abbeville, Louisiana; Russell M. Noegel (Annmarie R.) of Augusta; Owen C. Noegel (Julie S.) of Abbeville, Louisiana; Christopher L. Noegel (Jennie) of Forsyth; Matthew D. Noegel (Pam) of Macon; Eleanor Noegel Cannon (Jason) of Chapin, South Carolina; Richard A. L. Noegel of Columbia, South Carolina; Grayson R. Hardaway (Victoria) of Nashville, Tennessee; Graham M. Hardaway of Clarksville, Tennessee; Regan A. Hardaway of Denver, Colorado; and Hayden B. Hardaway of Aiken, South Carolina; by seventeen great-grandchildren: William, Maria, Jacob, and Seth Noegel of Abbeville, Louisiana; Annabelle, Rusty, Grady, and Emma Kate Noegel of Augusta; Owen, Bennett, and Estelle Noegel of Abbeville, Louisiana; Christian, Audrey, and Ella Smolen of Chapin, South Carolina; John David Noegel of Macon; Elanor and Ender Hardaway of Nashville, Tennessee; and by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held Monday, July 24, at 11 a.m., at Platt's Chapel on Crawford Avenue, with burial at Westover Memorial Park, the Rev. Dr. R. Alton Cadenhead officiating. The family will receive callers at Platt's on Monday, beginning at 10 a.m., and will receive guests at the Darmouth Road home of Mr and Mrs Russell M Noegel after the burial. Floral offerings will be gratefully accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the UDC or the DAR.


Pallbearers will be beloved nephews William Lee Swann of Covington; Thomas Swann Newsome of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Felix Lewis Burton and John Swann Burton of Brooks County; James Michael Carter of Valdosta; and Victor Edwin Swann of Valrico, Florida.
