John Wesley Stillwell

December 3, 1928 — July 29, 2020

Colonel John Wesley Stillwell, beloved husband of the late Helen Edwards Stillwell, entered into rest on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at Beaufort National Cemetery.

Col. Stillwell was a native of Mineola, New York. He attended college at Iowa State University, where he met his wife, Helen Edwards. He served in the US Navy and Naval Reserves, before joining the US Army. He was a decorated soldier and served through two tours of Vietnam.

He was awarded the following for his service:

National Defense service Medal (1st OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1st OLC), WWIIVM, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Chief of Staff Identification Badge, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (4 campaigns), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Legion of Merit (2nd OLC), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Army Forces Honor Medal 1st CL, 2 O/S Bars Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2)

After 35 years of faithful service, he retired in Georgia. After retirement, he was employed by Cincinnati Electronics and ITT as liaison to the military. He finished his working career as a Senior Tax advisor for H&R Block for 17 years.

He was a Christian man who loved God, his family, and his Country! He was to all of us the Colonel thru and thru and tough as nails, but loved even more. He made so many friends during his lifetime and remembered them even to the end! Especially those from Church, his work at H&R block and of course all his walking buddies that he went with everyday at Augusta Mall! He was loved by many and we are all going to miss you dearly! We love you Pops, Dad, Grumpy, and Great Grumpy!!

He is survived by his children; Charles W. Stillwell (Sharon), Cora Stillwell Norton and Dawn R. Key (Kevin), his grandchildren; Wesley, Matthew, Heather, Neal, Zachary and Dalton and his great grandchildren; Kelse, Caleb, James, Christopher, and Rhett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen.
