Howard Albert Wilber

Howard A. Wilber passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022.

Mr. Wilber was born December 2, 1928 in Adrian, Michigan, the son of Margaret Franz Wilber Whitehouse and stepfather, Frank Whitehouse. He graduated from Pennsylvania High, Freedom, PA in 1946; and, the next day, enlisted and was sworn into the US Marines. With the end of WW II, he received and early release, then attended Penn State College, at the Erie PA campus to study Engineering. With the Korean Conflict, he was recalled to Active duty in the US Army and completed his assignment at Camp Gordon in 1953.

On June 25, 1953, he married Rita Murtha. They enjoyed 63 wonderful years sharing their lives, volunteering with wide range of civic organizations, community service, traveling and camping throughout the United States and Canada.

Mr. Wilber retired in 1982 after working 34 years at American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel as Supervising Engineer. He returned to Augusta and retired again in 1995 after working 11 years with Augusta Iron & Steel, Inc. as Chief Engineer.

Mr. Wilber volunteered throughout the community, to include: 20 years with the Boy Scouts of America in Fort McIntosh District - Allegheny Trails Council. He “earned” and was awarded the highest position as District Commissioner and received many other awards to include the Silver Beaver, the highest distinction at that level. He volunteered 11 years at the Augusta Museum of History as Docent. He also volunteered one year as interviewer for the WWII Veterans History Project.

Mr. Wilber was preceded in death by wife Rita; brother, Robert Whitehouse; sister Marian Wilber Reinard (Harry); brother in laws William Murtha, Raymond Murtha; Donald Murtha; Jack Murtha and Sister in Law Marge Murtha.

Mr. Wilber is Survived by brother Roger Whitehouse (Deborah); sister Mary Alice Whitehouse
Rider (Al); brothers in law, Ronald Murtha (Betty); and sister in law Sue Philips (Ed).

A celebration of life is set for Saturday February 5, 2022 at 11:00am at Brandon Wilde Life Care Community. Strict Covid protocols will be enforced.
