Evelyn Marie Smith

Evelyn Marie Smith, age 97, gained her eternal reward on Friday, May 14, 2021.

Evelyn was born in Copper Hill, Tennessee to the late William Earl Russell and Minnie Crawford Russell Lance. She was the last survivor of eleven children. In her younger years while living in Augusta, Evelyn was a longtime member of Curtis Baptist Church where she taught children’s sunday school for many years. Her final years were spent at Magnolia Estates of Oconee near Watkinsville, GA.

A true Christian, Evelyn strived to live by example and she always sought to find the good in people. She never said an unkind word about anyone and it was said she had the patience of Job. Her favorite scripture was John 3:16 and she lived her life telling others about the promise of eternal life.

Evelyn was creative, enjoyed crafts, was an accomplished seamstress, an excellent cook, and a proud and loving matriarch. She enjoyed bowling, camping, and gardening.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Smith; infant son, Edward Carlyle Smith; son in law, William Hugh Kemp; and granddaughter in law, Kathy Kemp.

She is survived by her four daughters, Valerie Kemp of Eatonton, Vivian Mulkey (J.C. “Monty”) of Augusta, Veronica Fincher (Robert) of Watkinsville, and Vicki Soutar (Douglas) of Watkinsville; eight grandchildren, Dana Richards (Jimmy), Carla Snow, Denise Stancil (David), Sonny Kemp (Leah), Ty Kemp, Alicia Fincher, Wesley Fincher (Erin), and Adam Meador (Becky); twelve great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Evelyn’s life and service to the Lord will take place at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of Platt’s Belair Road with Dr. Mark Sterling officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Platt’s Belair Road.
